The Medici Arsenals and the Republican Arsenals are an important testament to the glorious maritime tradition of Pisa. Built between the 13th and 16th centuries, they were the heart of the city's naval production, used for the construction and maintenance of the vessels of the powerful Maritime Republic of Pisa.
The Republican Arsenals, located near the Citadel, were built in the 13th century and housed the shipyards where the famous Pisan galleys were made, essential for dominance over the seas.
The Medici Arsenals, constructed later in the 16th century by order of the Medici, are located along the Lungarno Simonelli and today host the Museum of Ancient Ships of Pisa, where exceptional archaeological finds can be admired, including perfectly preserved ancient Roman boats.
